<span style="font-weight: 400;">Second Sundays is a free event series that engages Pioneer Works disciplines through live music, food, artists’ open studios, and interactive programs.</span>

Pioneer Works, the astronomers of Columbia University, and the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York host various stargazing events. We welcomed thousands of New Yorkers into our garden for The Great American Eclipse and regularly bring our telescopes out for public viewing, including most Second Sundays.

Pioneer Works is pleased to present Anthony McCall’s <em>Solid Light Works</em>, opening on January 12, 2018. This exhibition marks the artist’s first institutional exhibition in New York and first time that his vertical installations will be shown alongside their horizontal variants. Requiring over thirty feet of clearance from floor to ceiling, very few New York venues can accommodate these six-colossal works. The epic vertical and horizontal installations will fill Pioneer Works’ monumental main hall, which will be completely blacked out and immersed in haze.

A seminal figure of Expanded Cinema, McCall is well known for his “solid-light works.” It was a series he began in 1973 with the 16mm film <em>Line Describing a Cone</em>, in which a volumetric form composed of a beam of projected light slowly evolves in real, three-dimensional space. McCall regards these works as occupying a place somewhere between sculpture, cinema, and drawing: sculpture because the projected volumes must be occupied and explored by a moving spectator; cinema because these large-scale objects are not static, but structured to progressively shift and change over time; and drawing, because the genesis of each installation is a two-dimensional line-drawing.

(2008); and “Dreamlands” at the Whitney Museum of American Art (2017).

Anthony McCall: Solid Light Works

Shuta Hasunuma’s <em>Compositions</em> features a selection of new works created both in Japan and during Hasunuma’s Pioneer Works residency in winter 2017. The exhibition is the artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States. It gathers together sculpture and videos centered on sounds from everyday life, which probe the circumstances and frameworks surrounding human existence.

Hasunuma’s sound works center on environmental and electronic sounds and extensive collaborations with diverse musicians including Akio Suzuki, Keiji Haino, and Fluxus member Mieko Shiomi. By molding, arranging, and visualizing sounds in time and space, Hasunuma’s practice seeks to answer the question: How can something intangible like sound or music be transferred between human beings in physical, material form? Hasunuma creates situations and environments that bring together people of different ages, genders, and ethnicities. Through their interaction they seek to illuminate afresh exactly what it is we call “sound” or “music.”

Created during Hasunuma’s residency, the video work <em>Walking Score in Red Hook</em> (2017) follows the artist as he walks through the Brooklyn neighborhood with a mic dragging behind him on the ground, alongside footage of earlier iterations of the performance filmed in Tokyo and Beijing. In <em>STUDIES</em> (2018), Hasunuma creates sculptures that exist neither as classifiable objects nor as instruments designed for sound-making. In these three-dimensional works, multiple videos and sounds play simultaneously in the same space. These videos are a record of a dozen people engaging collaboratively with the sculptures, producing sounds as if they were performing music. Visitors will have their own opportunity to engage with the sculptural works to produce sounds and create new actions in the present time frame.

To celebrate this opening, Hasunuma will perform with U-zhaan immediately following the exhibition’s reception on Friday, February 23rd. U-zhaan is a Japanese tabla player who worked with Hasunuma on their collaborative album <em>2 Tone</em>, to be released in Japan this spring.

<p>Visit our tech residents to explore the artistic realms of Artificial Intelligence and visions of utopic, virtual realities. The VE lab features Lacrymis (2018) by tech resident Jessica Wilson. Lacrymis (2018) is a three-channel video that follows a CG animated cherub&#8217;s physical expressions of emotional states. The work is set on the verge of tears. </p>

<p>Experience a ”deconstructed” virtual environment that investigates the relationship between the isolating yet fantastical nature of VR and the physicality of the technology that facilitates it. This project is produced in collaboration with the Pioneer Works Virtual Environments Lab. </p>

<p>In anticipation of our visiting astronaut Leland Melvin on March 22, take a trip to the International Space Station, 250 miles above Earth, via Virtual Reality. Experience motion in a zero gravity environment and learn about the experiments and missions performed on the Station.
